The process comprises placing the sheets together and making electrical contact between them at one or more points while the are gripped between the jaws of a vice, applying the two electrodes of a welding clamp to the sheets at points directly opposite one another, and delivering an electric current to the electrodes with a rising intensity so that the metal is heated at the contact point between them. The rupture of the insulation is detected from a sharp drop in the welding voltage (Us), and the sheets are then spot welded by applying a controlled voltage between the electrodes.
