The present invention relates to a chromatography column that removes the longitudinal load from the column tube (52) altogether and transfers it to a yoke (56) and stanchion (54) arrangement situated around but external to the column tube (52). By using the yoke/stanchion system, the central adjuster (60) can be used to move the top end (66) into and out of the column tube (52). Thus, when internal pressure is applied to the column, the tube (52) experiences no longitudinal load. Additionally, the yoke (56) and stanchion (54) design allows for complete removal of the end (66) from the tube without cumbersome disassembly. Moreover, the yoke (56) provides a place to retain the end (66) while the tube (52) is being filled, emptied, cleaned or repaired.
