Determination of the bioactivity of supported biofilms in biofilters (1) or biowashers which have been used with contaminated gases, especially exhaust air, is effected with respect to the inhomogenieties produced. The method comprises oxygen demand measurements. Determination of the bioactivity of supported biofilms in biofilters (1) or biowashers which have been used with contaminated gases, especially exhaust air, is effected with respect to the inhomogenieties produced, the method comprises taking samples from individual zones especially through the depth of the filter or washer, separating the biofilm from the individual zones and converting into an aqueous solution using an organic energy source together with microorganisms present in the biofilm, the oxygen demand being measured at predetermined time intervals.
