Separating and covering device (10) comprises a partly flexible material sheet (15) fixed on the vehicle and held in an open or closed position. The outer free transverse edge (16) of the material sheet perpendicular to the open (A) and closed direction (Z) has a rigid end board (17) with at least one holding element for removably fixing the material sheet on the vehicle in the closed position. The material sheet is fixed with its inner transverse edge on a winding shaft (14) arranged in a housing (11) and is unwound from this against a restoring force through a slit (21) in the housing. The end board has at least one buffer (23) with a stop surface (28) supported on the housing when the material sheet is wound on the winding shaft and the end board is distanced from the housing and the material sheet from the limiting surfaces (37, 38) of the housing forming the slit.
