The invention relates to an apparatus for preparing an intervertbral space i n order to receive an intervertebral-joint prosthesis. Said apparatus comprise s a fixing and guiding device (4) which is fixed to the two vertebral bodies ( 2) concerned. Said device is used for fixing the vertebral bodies to each other and for guiding a processing tool. An adjusting instrument (11, 12) is provided so that the fixing and guiding device (4) can be arranged exactly o n the vertebral body clip (2) despite difficult operating conditions. With the help of said adjusting instrument, the fixing and guiding device (4) is positioned before being fixed to the vertebral bodies. Said adjusting instrument (11, 12) comprises a intervertebral plate (11), the extension thereof corresponding approximately to the intervertebral area. As a result, the adjusting device is positioned exactly in relation to the vertebral body (2).
