SELF-COOLED ULTRASONIC APPLICATOR FOR MEDICAL APPLICATIONS

A medical instrument (100) uses solid tapered cones (101) mounted to a concave, spherically curved, piezoelectric ultrasound transducer (103) which focuses and concentrates the ultrasound energy to a narrow tip (301) so very high levels of ultrasound can be delivered to the tissue (108) adjacent to the tip. Ultrasound matching layers of variable curvature geometries are employed at the tip (301) aid in transferring the energy from the tip to the tissue. Alternative embodiments employing cooling technology are also described.
