The invention provides compounds represented by the general formula: [wherein X is selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl, substituted hydroxyl, halogeno, mercapto and substituted mercapto; one of Y1 and Y2 is hydrogen or alkyl and the other is Z-W (wherein Z is a single bond or a divalent group formed by removing two hydrogen atoms from alkane or substituted alkane; and W is hydroxyl, substituted hydroxyl, aldehyde, carboxyl, or substituted carboxyl); and R1 to R24 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, and substituted alkyl]. The invention also provides a method for quantitative determination of the above compounds; compositions containing the same and imparting stress resistance; and compounds imparting stress resistance.
