The process enables determination of the number of bits to load in to a transmission channel. The procedure uses a coder to add redundancy to the binary information, and interlacer allowing suppression of all correlation in the binary elements. This allows determination of the number of bits to load in to the transmission channel as a function of the signal to noise ratio and binary error probability. The process provides modulation for a digital transmission system with an error corrector code, and comprises a determination of the number of bits to load in to a transmission channel. The procedure associates a coder intended to add redundancy to the binary information, and interlacer allowing suppression of all correlation in the binary elements, and labelling of the same elements with Gray type coding, in order to associate the interlaced binary elements with a constellation point chosen from a predefined set. The procedure allows precise determination of the order of the constellation, and determination of the number of bits to load in to the transmission channel as a function of the signal to noise ratio measured at reception and as a function of the binary error probability at the output of the receiver.
