In a process to de-water and thicken post-fermented wastes, the fermented wastes are surrendered without further mechanical de-watering directly to a vacuum drying assembly (2). Prior to the vacuum drying process the dry matter content is in the range approximately 15-50 %. Following vacuum drying the dry matter is in the range approximately 30-45 %. Condensate from the drying matter is removed. The dried matter is mixed with a structure-enhancing additive and then subjected to further treatment. An Independent claim is included for a fermentation assembly linked to a vacuum-drying thickener drum without an intermediate de-watering assembly. The drum has an internal spiral feed, heater, heat exchanger and vacuum pump. |
