A process for the manufacture of oxacylation products and optionally hydroxylation products of condensed aromatic compounds comprises reacting a condensed aromatic compound e.g. naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, fluorene with a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid and molecular oxygen in the presence of a noble metal of Group VIII of the Mendeleef Periodic Table or a compound thereof, the stable valency of the noble metal in said compounds being at most four, and optionally hydrolysing the oxacylation product to the hydroxylation product. The preparations of 1- naphthyl acetate and 1-acetoxy-2-methoxy naphthalene are exemplified. Suitable condensed aromatic starting materials includeα- and #-chloro (or bromo) naphthalene, pentachloronaphthalene, 9,10 - dichloroanthracene, # - naphthyl - ethyl ether, 1 - methoxyphenanthrene and 2-methoxy fluorene. |
