<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide activated carbon capable of effectively adsorbing trihalomethane compounds such as chloroform, residual agricultural chemical components, etc., by allowing the activated carbon to have a hydrophobized surface formed without carrying out heat treatment of an activated carbon material, and to a provide a water-purifying device. <P>SOLUTION: An organosilane of the formula R<SP>1</SP>-Si(R<SP>2</SP>)<SB>(3-a)</SB>(-O-)<SB>a</SB>(where R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each a 2-22C straight or branched hydrocarbon chain which may have a substituent and a is an integer of 1-3) is bonded to the surface of activated carbon to modify the surface to a hydrophobic surface. For example, when octadecyltrichlorosilane (CH<SB>3</SB>(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>17</SB>SiCl<SB>3</SB>) is dissolved as the organosilane in a non-aqueous solvent and activated carbon is immersed in this solvent, hydrogen chloride removal reaction takes place between hydroxy groups (-OH) on the surface of the activated carbon and the silyl group of the above compound, whereby they bond covalently to form a molecular film. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
