<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersant with which an ink having high color developing property with little oozing on a plain paper and having not only sufficient color developing property but gloss and fixing property on a single-purpose paper can be produced, to provide a method for manufacturing the dispersant, and to provide a dispersion prepared by using the dispersant, a water-based ink prepared by using the dispersion, and a printed material recorded by using the water-based ink. <P>SOLUTION: The dispersant is produced by polymerizing one or more kinds selected from reactive monomers, oligomers and macromers in a solvent by using a radical polymerization initiator having a carboxyl group, or further by extending the obtained polymer by using one or more kinds selected from reactive monomers, oligomers and macromers. The dispersion is prepared by using the above dispersant, and the water-based ink is prepared by using the dispersion.
