PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a specific welding unit capable of executing a welding process extremely safely and surely. SOLUTION: This welding unit 1 has two unit half-bodies 5, 6 provided with a controller 1 and a pair of fastening/clamping parts 10 each unit half-body of which is capable of moving in each direction by a pivotal movement 12 by means of a fastening cylinder 13. The fastening/clamping parts 10 can move in each direction from a mounting position suitable for passing a rail head 15 to the welding position 16 where the fastening/clamping parts 10 come in contact with the rail web 17 of both rails 2 to be welded for execution of welding. A feeler device 18 is provided for detecting the finish of the pivotal movement 12 and the correct welding position 16 of the fastening/clamping parts 10 to be defined by adaption of the fastening/clamping parts 10 to the rail web 17, and transmits a control signal necessary for continuous execution of the welding process.
