A brightness control apparatus of television and a method thereof are provided to sense ambient brightness when the television is on, to display lowest brightness first, and to enhance the brightness linearly to a set brightness stored in a storage part so as to adapt a user to the brightness of the television and to reduce glare. A method of controlling brightness of television comprises the steps of; sensing ambient brightness when the television is turned on, while a brightness adjusting mode of the television is on(S10,S12); displaying lowest brightness first when the sensed ambient brightness is below a predetermined value(S14,S16); displaying preset brightness when the sensed ambient brightness is normal(S26); increasing brightness linearly to a set brightness stored in a storage part(S18,S20); stopping the brightness increment when a stop key is inputted(S22); adjusting the brightness to a set value when a recovery key is inputted(S24); and adjusting the brightness according to the adjusted state when the brightness is brighter or darker through an addition adjusting key(S28,S30).
