The present invention relates to novel substituted alkyl piperidines according to the formula: (see fig I) and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein R1 and Y are variously defined. These piperidines are useful in that they act to inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol in mammals and in fungi.
