PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refuse volume reducer capable of preventing the occurrence of failure by suppressing a rapid change of an air pressure in a bellows tank even when a trouble occurs. SOLUTION: The refuse volume reducer is provided with a bellows tank 3 serving as a compression mechanism to compress refuse in a refuse container 1 and expandable by an air pump 5; a compression plate 4 interlocking with expansion of the bellows tank 3; and a compression plate 4 interlocking with extension of the bellows tank 3. In the refuse volume reducer 2 to effect containing operation of the compression plate 4, compression operation of refuse in the refuse container 1 is carried out through movement of the compression plate 4 interlocking with shrinkage of the bellows tank 3, during a time between a point of time at which compression operation is started and a point of time when a given time elapses, pressurization of the bellows tank 3 and release of the atmosphere in the bellows tank 3 are alternately carried out. During the period from a time point when containing operation is started to that when a given time elapses after detection of containing of the compression plate 4, reduction of a pressure in the bellows tank 3 and release of the atmosphere in the bellows tank 3 are alternately carried out.
