PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic hydroxy compound by which the aromatic hydroxy compound is directly obtained from an aromatic compound under mild conditions. SOLUTION: This method for producing the aromatic hydroxy compound is carried out as follows. The aromatic compound is reacted with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst composed of a heteropoly acid or its salt (A) or an oxo acid containing an element of P or Si and at least one element selected from V, Mo and W as a whole or a mixture (B) of a salt thereof and a reducing substance. Thereby, the corresponding aromatic hydroxy compound is produced. The heteropoly acid or its salt (A) may contain the element of P or Si and at least the one element selected from V, Mo and W as constituent elements. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
