PURPOSE: A device for processing an ATM cell in an asynchronous base station system is provided to convert an AAL2 cell into an AAL5 cell, and to simultaneously process the AAL2 cell and the AAL5 cell, thereby obtaining communication bandwidth for voice, video, and data communication. CONSTITUTION: An upper shelf link(310) supplies a cable communication link with an external upper shelf. A lower device link(340) supports ATM backplane communication with a lower device. A controller(360) supplies a system clock and a cell bus clock, and controls a downloading function with state management of lower devices. An AAL type converter(330) converts AAL2 cells into AAL5 cells, and transmits the AAL5 cells. Interface units(350,355) implement interfaces between masters from interfaces between the lower device link(340) and the controller(360) and interfaces between the upper shelf link(310) and the controller(360). Level converters(320,325) convert UTOPIA level standards of the ATM cells, and supply interfaces between the upper shelf link(310) and the interface units(350,355) and between the lower device link(340) and the interface units(350,355).
