PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a prior art PWM cycloconverter that, since an open circuit of an output terminal and a short circuit on an input side must be avoided, it is theoretically difficult to constitute a high current stack including a snubber, and thereby it is difficult to manufacture a high capacity converter. SOLUTION: The multiplex PWM cycloconverter is arranged such that output terminals of respective phases of p unit converters in an n input m output PWM cycloconverter comprising n*m bidirectional switches (n, m and p are integers of 2 or larger, respectively) are connected in parallel through reactors to have m outputs, as a whole. Each output phase of each unit converter is provided with a current sensor in order to detect a current and an output voltage command for each unit converter is corrected depending on the imbalance of the current. According to the arrangement, a high capacity converter can be obtained and since a capacitor is not required at a DC link part, the volume and cost of the converter can be reduced.
