<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical communication system for a Raman amplification system in which nonlinear characteristics associated with Raman amplification are satisfactory by making communications possible even when an optical fiber comprising a relay transmission line is disconnected at any position. <P>SOLUTION: On a transmission line between a terminal station and a repeater or on a transmission line between repeaters, a first optical fiber connected to the side of the terminal station and the repeater is an optical fiber having a first nonlinear effective cross-sectional area and a second optical fiber connected between the first optical fibers is an optical fiber having the nonlinear effective cross-sectional area wider than that of the first optical fiber.
