PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-emitting light emitting device capable of controlling optical characteristics of light emitted therefrom and a method of manufacturing the same, and also to provide an optical module and an optical transmission device including the surface-emitting light emitting device.

SOLUTION: The surface-emitting light emitting device 100 includes an emission face 108 to emit light therefrom and a bank 110 so formed as to surround the emission face 108. An upper edge section 110a of the bank 110 is formed at a place higher than the emission face 108.
