<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera which enables a user to automatically take an optimum picture without being aware of image compression. <P>SOLUTION: This camera finds a subject distance by a range finding part 12 and controls the focusing position of a photographic lens 13 in subject photography by a zooming position detection part 23 and a system controller 11 according to the output of the range finding part 12. A subject image inputted through the photographic lens 13 is converted into a digital electric signal by a solid imaging element 14. The output of the solid imaging element 14 has its image compressed by a compression part 17.
