A thick-film slab lens for coupling a semiconductor laser array to an optical fiber array or a waveguide array of an optical integrated circuit integrally into one piece with high efficiency, suitable for mass production. A method for manufacturing the same is also disclosed. The slab lens is characterized by having a thick film shape, a refractive index distribution of a square form in only the direction of the thickness, a relative refractive-index difference as large as several tens of percent, and a length in the direction of the propagation of light of about 1/4 or an odd integral multiple of the period of the meandering of the light. Thus, the light intensity distribution of, e.g., a semiconductor laser having a small spot size in only one direction can be directly converted into a light intensity distribution having a size approximately equal to the spot size of a standard optical fiber and a generally circular form. A light source and a waveguide can be integrated into one piece. The structure is small-sized and lightweight. The manufacture is simple and mass production is possible.
