The car bumper comprises an outer shell (8) and a cross-beam (7). These are connected by ribs which normally rest against the front of the beam. When a crash occurs the outer ribs (3, 5) bend so that their ends lose contact with it while the central rib (4) also bends but remains in contact with a recess on the front of it.
