PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of improving an output, suppressing output fluctuation, improving the wear resistance of an MR head, and correcting head staining. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is constituted in such a manner that at least one substrate coating layer and a magnetic layer are formed in this order on one surface of a nonmagnetic support, and a backcoat layer is formed on the opposite surface. In a state where the magnetic recording medium is brought into contact, at a winding angle 9°, with a cylindrical test piece which has a dimater 5 mm and center ling average surface roughness Ra set to 10 nm±1 nm, and slid at a relative speed 4.0 m/sec., and traveling tension 0.92 N (0.094 kgf) (1/2 inch tape), a dynamic friction coefficientμfor the test piece is 0.01≤μ≤0.035.
