It is intended to provide a protein having an amino acid racemase activity with a low substrate specificity; a DNA encoding this protein; a recombinant DNA containing this DNA; a transformant having this recombinant DNA; a process for producing the above protein with the use of this transformant; and a process for producing a racemic amino acid characterized by comprising using an optionally processed culture of the above transformant as an enzyme source, putting this enzyme source and an amino acid in an aqueous medium, racemizing the amino acid in the aqueous medium, and collecting the racemic amino acid from the aqueous medium.
