The usage of allocated transmission resources by applications executing in a device in a packet data communications network are optimised by an application specifying to a quality of service manager function that two or more packet data streams have the same quality of service requirements as regards non-cumulative quality of service requirements, and the quality of service manager function manages said packet data streams as a packet data stream group in accordance with said non-cumulative quality of service requirements, and in accordance with the totality of a cumulative quality of service requirement, such as bandwidth of all packet data streams in said packet data stream group.
