Method for initiating a given function in a data processing system by use of a chip card for access and authentication. Accordingly information stored on the card, such as a PIN, is compared with centrally stored identification information. In the case of a successful authentication the identity of the cardholder need not necessary be divulged. The invention also relates to a corresponding chip card.
