Device comprises means (21-23) for generation of a signal proportional to the internal resistance of the vehicle battery (10) during starting and during subsequent driving and evaluation means for analysis of the internal resistance signal in order to detect starting from an external power source or battery. Alternately or additionally the engine rotational velocity can be measured and evaluated for the same purpose. An Independent claim is made for a method for detection of starting of a motor vehicle with an external power source, whereby the vehicle's internal battery resistance is monitored and or the engine rotational velocity is monitored.
