A mechanical excavator has an adapter (10) unit with a quick-change fixture (12) which locates on the excavator arm. The adapter is a coil or aggregate compacting unit (11) which esp. has its own integral power supply. The compactor is mounted on a guide arm (20). The compactor arm (13) presentation is adjustable for pitch (C), roll (A) and yaw (17).
