<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing charcoal without consuming fossil fuel, and using charcoal gas obtained from the charcoal, water and air as an energy source for performing a carbonization. <P>SOLUTION: This method for producing the charcoal is provided by bringing air and steam in contact with the charcoal in a stage that the charcoal reaches 800-1,200°C high temperature in a carbonizing oven 2 or in a gasification oven placed separately for causing a gasification reaction to produce a charcoal gas containing a large amount of combustible gas, and heating the material to be treated for performing the carbonization with a burnt gas obtained by burning the charcoal gas in a burnt gas-generating and supplying means 3.
