The present invention relates to the identification of electronic files using embedded data and, more particularly, to ways of embedding such data in media files so as to allow subsequent extraction of the embedded data using a general purpose scan facility. The identification of files, particularly of different versions of the same files, is an essential feature of computer systems. Known systems, such as the 'WHAT' command found on HP UX systems are currently used in source code control systems (SCCS) and allow the extraction of manually inserted version strings from software source code files. The present invention aims to provide a method that allows the embedding of such version information and user data strings into media files, such as audio and image files. <IMAGE>
