<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparent antireflection film which can effectively improve the contrast of an image display device with a single optical film, to provide a multifunctional optical filter having functions of effectively improving the contrast, of decreasing the intensity of IR rays, of improving the color purity and of shielding against electromagnetic rays, and to provide an image display device equipped with the above optical filter. <P>SOLUTION: The transparent antireflection film has a metal thin film layer and a metal oxide thin film layer deposited on a transparent supporting body, with the metal thin film layer having 1 to 8 nm thickness and the metal oxide thin film layer having 50 to 120 nm thickness. The optical filter comprises the above antireflection film, and if desired, the filter includes a visible light absorbing layer, an IR absorbing layer and a shielding layer against electromagnetic waves.
