PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical coupling element in which a residual reflection is effectively prevented without sacrificing optical coupling efficiency and to provide an optical device having the optical coupling element. SOLUTION: The optical coupling element optically couples an optical element formed on a substrate and an optical transmission means which is provided adjacent to the substrate. The optical coupling element is formed by being connected to an optical waveguide part 12 of which the width of the side of the optical transmission means is narrower than that of the side of the optical element and to the optical transmission means side of the optical waveguide 12, and has an optical waveguide part 14 of which the width of the optical transmission means side is narrower than that of the optical element side, and of which the length is shorter than the length corresponding to the wavelength of signal light. Thus, the optical coupling efficiency is optimized by the optical waveguide part 12 and the residual reflection is suppressed by the optical waveguide part 14. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
