PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for introducing a polar group in a selected position of the main chain of an olefin polymer. SOLUTION: A 2-20Cα-olefin and an olefin containing a polar group: CH<SB>2</SB>= CH-CH<SB>2</SB>-Y (wherein Y is a polar group containing an O or N atom) are copolymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) a compound of a transition metal of the group 3-10 of the periodic table and (B) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of (B-1) an organic aluminumoxy compound, (B-2) an organic aluminum compound shown by the formula: R<SP>a</SP><SB>3</SB>Al (wherein R<SP>a</SP>is a 1-10C straight-chain alkyl group) and (B-3) an ionized compound, whereby there is produced the olefin polymer containing a polar group in which a methyl group substituted by a group Y ( -CH<SB>2</SB>Y; Y is a polar group containing an O or N atom) is introduced in a position (ω-1) of the main chain of the polymer.
