<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heighten utilization efficiency of the light and further to obtain a high-definition and high contrast liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: A fluorescent material emitting light with the same type of color as that of a color filter is dispersed in the color filter, is excited by ultraviolet rays and a blue ray emitted from a fluorescent tube and emits light.
