PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical element made of ZnS at a rather low cost. SOLUTION: The method features that a raw material made of ZnS is subjected to hot press forming by using a pair of dies made of SiC (silicon carbide) to finish the raw material into the final product form. Or, dies made of glass carbon can be used instead of the SiC dies. Preferably the temperature for press forming is controlled to≥900°C and≤1,200°C, the press time is controlled to≥100 sec and≤1,500 sec and the forming pressure is controlled to≥29.4 MPa and≤98 MPa.
