The present invention relates to an anti-aging cosmetic composition containing a Butea monosperma extract as an active ingredient. The present invention further relates to a pharmaceutical composition for skin application, containing the Butea monosperma extract as the active ingredient. The cosmetic composition of the present invention improves skin-moisturizing and skin-whitening functions due to following effects: antioxidant effects, anti-aging effects (inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) protein expression), effects of stimulating biosynthesis of procollagen type 1, effects of increasing skin elasticity, and skin-whitening effects. In addition, the composition also facilitates exfoliation of dead skin cells on epidermis, thereby making the surface of skin look burnished.
