PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for effectively manufacturing a polyester resin for a coating which bears mainly a hydroxy group as its end group and permits excellent adhesion of a topcoat. SOLUTION: In manufacturing the polyester resin comprising an acid component mainly composed of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and an alcohol component mainly composed of an aliphatic glycol, having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.15-0.40 and an acid value of 3-10 mgKOH/g and bearing mainly a hydroxy group on its ends, steam is blown into the polyester resin at 180-270°C at a rate of 1.0-4.0 Nm<SP>3</SP>/10<SP>6</SP>g after the polycondensation reaction.
