PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an instrument for measuring wavelength by which absolute wavelengths can be measured easily and which has a good wavelength shielding characteristic and is hardly affected by vibrations. SOLUTION: Since the light from a light source 8 is entirely propagated through an optical fiber without being propagated through spaces, a wavelength measuring instrument can withstand vibrations. In addition, a stress is directly given to a fiber Bragg grating 10-3 by means of an electrostrictive element 4, sweeping speed of the instrument can be increased. Consequently, the instrument can sweep frequencies to several tens kHz as the driving frequency of the electrostrictive element 4. Moreover, since spectrum of the fiber Bragg grating 10-3 has a very steep cut-off characteristic, the wavelength cutting-off characteristic of the instrument becomes good. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
