PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve NOx control performance and fuel consumption of an engine. SOLUTION: When a variable valve mechanism is controlled to minimize a valve overlap in an idle range, an increase in the rate of residual gas caused by delayed operation is calculated as a difference between the fundamental value of residual gas under steady-state operation and an estimate of actual residual gas rate, and based on the difference and engine speeds, a correction for a decrease in the open area of a swirl control valve that matches the increase in residual gas is calculated to control the opening of the valve.
