PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method capable of stable continuous operation for a long time and obtaining a high quality aliphatic polyester when the aliphatic polyester is continuously manufactured by melt kneading and polymerizing a cyclic ester in a kneading extruder and to obtain a high quality aliphatic polyester. SOLUTION: This method of manufacturing an aliphatic polyester comprizes continuously feeding a polymerizable material capable of forming the aliphatic polyester and a catalyst to a kneading extruder, implementing the polymerization by melt kneading in the kneading extruder, and continuously discharging a resultant polymer. At least one kind selected from the group consisting of a cyclic ester and a cyclic ester prepolymer is used as the polymerizable material. A high melt viscosity material is continuously fed to the kneading extruder together with the polymerizable material and the catalyst. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
