A brake system for a machine tool monitors the braking action initiated by switching off the drive. Displacement monitors measure the actual displacement during the braking sequence and compare the values against stored reference values. If the actual values are less than preset values a brake indicator is activated, if the preset values are exceeded a warning signal is activated and the machine is set into a safety switch-off. The braking system operates in addition to motor braking and is particularly applied to vertically moving drives.
