PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for solventlessly and efficiently producing a high-quality cationic surfactant of a favorable color tone with slight byproducts. SOLUTION: The method comprises carrying out a solventless reaction between an alkanolamine ester and a dialkyl sulfate to obtain the cationic surfactant comprising a quaternary ammonium alkyl sulfate salt of at least one of formulae (1) to (3). In the above process, a reactor comprising a reaction vessel and a heat exchanger installed outside the reaction vessel and making a heat exchange of the reaction liquid in the vessel.
