PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a braking device in a drive unit such as an elevator drive unit adopting a new driving system. SOLUTION: In the drive unit with a belt, a rope or belt-like tension member supporting a moved body, such as an elevator car, is wound around a sheave, and the belt in contact with the region of a circular arc of the tension member wound around the sheave is driven to circulate by a motor. The drive unit has the braking device for pressing the belt, more specifically, for directly pressing the belt in the circular arc region toward the sheave, and a device for increasing the tension force of the belt, so that the drive unit is securely braked when the motor is stopped.
