A machining system for gear wheels has the gear wheels supported on movable mountings, with their axes vertical. The carousel support has a number of mountings and working stations where a vertical ram (7) moves each wheel in turn up into the machining position (3). The mountings have centering aids to ensure the gear wheels are correctly aligned.
