PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel suitable for manufacturing a spring steel wire for cold forming, which is superior in manufacturability of the spring steel wire, such as rod drawability and hardenability, and has a high strength of 200 kgf/mm<SP>2</SP>(HRC: 53) or more. SOLUTION: This spring steel comprises, by mass%, 0.38-0.53% C, 1.4-2.4% Si, 0.4-1.4% Mn, 0.05-0.35% Cu, 0.05-0.40% Ni, 0.05-0.55% Cr, 0.01-0.30% Mo, 0.0005-0.0030% B, and one or more elements of 0.01-0.20% V, 0.020-0.050% Nb, 0.020-0.100% Ti and 0.005-0.040% Al, while satisfying a relation of 1.2%≤C%+ Mn%+Cr%≤2.0%, and 1.4%≤(Si%)/3+(Cr%)/2+Mn%+353×B%≤2.1%.
