PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an N-hydroxyalkyl compound through suppressing discoloration caused by solvent decomposition and suppressing impurities due to the catalyst, and also in high selectivity, and to provide a highly heat-resistant and high-quality tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate composition with suppressed discoloration and slight impurities. SOLUTION: The method for producing the N-hydroxyalkyl compound comprises carrying out a reaction between an amido- or imido-functional compound and an epoxy compound in the presence of a catalyst; wherein the catalyst consists of a solid ion exchanger.
