Catalyst prepared by mixing the following components is new: (a) a chromium compound; (b) a magnesium, calcium, strontium or barium aroxide; and (c) a trihydrocarbyl aluminum, a hydrocarbyl aluminum chloride or bromide or an aluminoxane. Catalyst prepared by mixing the following components is new: (a) a chromium compound; (b) a magnesium, calcium, strontium or barium aroxide of formula (I); and (c) an organoaluminum compound of formula (II) or an aluminoxane. M(OR)2-nXn (I) M = Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba; R = 6-80C aryl; X = halogen or 1-30C hydrocarbyl; and n = 0-2. AIR'mY3-m (II) R' = 1-6C hydrocarbyl; Y = Cl or Br; and m = 1-3. An Independent claim is also included for an ethylene oligomerization process using the catalyst.
