PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor-controlled image reader where overshoot and vibration are not caused, including constant-speed moving time and also slow- down moving time. SOLUTION: The carriage type image reader for reading an image on an original surface while moving a scanning means by a motor is equipped with a register in which several pieces of information concerning the frequency of a clock are stored. After respectively setting numerical values required for driving to a pattern number register 103, registers 104 and 105 for storing the start address and the finish address of a RAM used in respective patterns, and a register 106 for storing the number of repeating times from starting the driving until finishing the driving, a pulse is inputted in a motor starting signal 107, and a motor clock (MCCLK) is outputted based on the driving information set in the registers so as to drive the motor.
